Omaha has a well-known horror host named Dr. Sanguinary, whose hosting duty on KMTV’s “Creature Features” managed to continue, in one form or another, from 1971 to 1983. The original actor playing Dr. Sanguinary, John Jones, passed away, but the character has since been revived by a new actor.
I did not know, until today, about short-lived Omaha horror host Macabra, who hosted “Theatre of the Macabre” on WOWT from 1982-85. She’s fondly remembered for her droll introductions to films, but the actress who played her has chosen to remain anonymous, apparently due to some creepy fan mail she received.
According to the web, she was a local businesswoman with no previous background in broadcasting who beat out 150 other applicants thanks, in part, to her striking appearance. Alas, very little exists out there about her character or the show she hosted — no old videos on YouTube, no fan pages, nothing. Perhaps this is for the best, to preserve the performer’s privacy, but I’d be curious if any non-identifying media still exists out there.
